Letter to Parents
I am honored to be the new Physical Education teacher at BELL Academy. I am writing you this letter to introduce myself and to let you know about my approach to Physical Education.
I am a recent graduate at Adelphi University. I completed both my Bachelors and my Masters program at this University with a degree in Physical Education. I am looking forward to leading your child/children into becoming more active. I plan to educate them on the importance of making healthy choices in order to gain a healthy lifestyle that they could hopefully carry with them throughout their lives.
I believe in giving students a realistic chance of successfully managing the challenges of growing, learning and developing. According to SHAPE America (Society of Health and Physical Educators), my national association, “Physical Education has undergone a transformation in rigor and focus and now is recognized as essential to a young person’s overall education experience and a foundation for lifelong healthy living.“
My teaching philosophy is to teach all students how to learn and develop a desire for lifelong fitness, health and wellness. My approach is committed to empowering students in becoming active within their own development of health enhancing skills, personal skills and life skills. In order to accomplish that, I will enable students to participate in a variety of lifetime activities. These activities will promote, support and maintain fitness, health and wellness. At some point your child/children will have to partake in the Fitness Gram Assessment. Students will have the opportunity to increase their physical fitness before administering this test as well as through goal setting. I will work on encouraging and teaching sportsmanship, cooperation, responsibility and respect!
Your child/children are responsible for coming to school dressed appropriately and prepared on the days they have gym in order to maintain safety. The proper dress attire consists of a BELL Academy school shirt uniform and black sweat pants/shorts. If they do not have sneakers on, they will not be able to participate that day and this will also be reflected within their preparedness grade.
If you have any questions/concerns you may contact me by email: Stoohey@thebellacademy.com. I look forward to a great year!
The first two weeks of school was started off with some team building, cooperative game activities. The students were able to socialize and work together in order to accomplish the assigned task/activity. They all did an excellent job and all seemed to have fun with it!
This week our first unit started is Football. There will be more to come!
We will be beginning our annual assessment of the Fitnessgram. This will continue through the middle of March.
Once we begin, students should be practicing the assessments at home. They will be reevaluated as they improve and as time permits.
About NYC FITNESSGRAM
Originally developed by the Cooper Institute of Aerobic Research, FITNESSGRAM supports students in learning about and measuring components of health-related fitness: aerobic endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition. The FITNESSGRAM assessment produces two reports, one for students and one for parents.
The NYC FITNESSGRAM report summarizes each student’s performance on fitness assessments and suggests ways to help them to reach the “Healthy Fitness Zone” (optimal performance for better health based on their age and gender). Unlike many traditional fitness assessments, students who participate in NYC FITNESSGRAM are measured based on individual performance and personal improvement, and are not judged against each other or a standardized norm.
50% Active Participation and Peer Interaction, (exhibits cooperation, sportsmanship/respect for others)
25% Skill Progression, Fitness Assessment and Quizzes/Home assignments
25% Preparedness and Responsibility (Is prepared for gym dressed in proper dress attire and show's responsibility for equipment and daily routine procedures)
