Course Description

Welcome to 8th Grade English Arts!  This year, we will be learning about the world through reading and writing.  We will analyze text with insight, provide text based evidence to back up our thoughts, establish and maintain a formal writing style, compose coherent and organized writing pieces, and use formal writing style while incorporating advanced vocabulary into our writing.  I look forward to working with all of you!

Unit 1: Refugees- Fleeing and Finding Home

Students will be reading the book Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai.  We will continue to develop our ability to closely read text while studying the theme of Fleeing and Finding Home: Refugees.  Students will read and analyze informational texts pertaining to the current refugee crisis, write multiple constructive responses in which they find the most relevant evidence and insightful analysis, participate in a Socratic Seminar, and write an extended response regarding the lives of the many refugees we study throughout the unit.
