ELA- Our current unit of focus will be centered around making connections between information conveyed in both fiction and non-fiction texts, along with establishing one’s own opinion on a topic. During our writing instruction, we will place a heavy emphasis on sentence structure and elaboration when composing written responses. To support student learning, we will continue to use CommonLit for our informational texts. The CommoLit platform not only helps students better understand grade-level texts through guiding questions and definitions, it is a great way to track feedback of each student’s reading and writing levels.
Independent reading of at least 35 minutes per night is assigned for homework several times a week. Independent reading strengthens reading stamina, fuels exposure to new vocabulary words, improves individual reading levels, and helps students become better writers. Here are two great sites to help you choose which books are appropriate for your son or daughter:Lexile.com – Using the information you received regarding the mid-year STAR Assessment, lexile.com allows you to search for specific lexile levels and grade levels.www.commonsensemedia.org – A free site that provides appropriateness ratings on thousands of books. Ratings are made in the following categories: Educational Value, Positive Messages, Positive Role Models and Representations, Violence, Sex, Language, Consumerism, and Drinking, Drugs, and Smoking.
